KONY2012 UPDATE REGARDING JASON RUSSELL.

There are two sides to this ‘breakdown’ that I can see. There’s Team A who believe he was an idiot for having this breakdown so publicly and are happily mocking him. And Team B who are jumping to Russell’s defense saying that ‘all these people insulting…

I find this fascinating. If you have time, read the full transcript.

Ira Glass: What does that mean, unpack the complexities?

Mike Daisey: Well it means, it means that, you know, just, like the hexane thing. I mean I think I’m agreeing with you.

Ira Glass: I mean with the hexane, we approached you and asked you specifically
about that. There’s an email that, that Brian sent you, about the hexane. He
wrote, “Apple’s 2011 report” – this is the responsibility report – “acknowledges
the hexane problem at two plants, one at Wintek and another at a logo supplier but not at Foxconn. These workers you were talking to, in the monologue, were they from Foxconn do you remember or from other plants?” And, and at that point you could have come back to us and said ‘oh no no no I didn’t meet these workers, you know, this is just something I inserted in the monologue based on things I had read and things I had heard in Hong Kong’ um, but instead you lied further and you said, you wrote, “The workers were from Wintek and not Foxconn.” Why not just tell us what really happened at that point?

[long pause]

Mike Daisey: I think I was terrified. [breathing]

Ira Glass: Of what?

[long pause]

Mike Daisey: – That—-

[long pause]

Mike Daisey: I think I was terrified that if I untied these things, that the work,
that I know is really good, and tells a story, that does these really great things for making people care,

I’m so glad that Tracie is able to find as much humour in Jezebel commenters as I do. Everybody is OFFENDED. Others that aren’t offended feel they MUST share their personal story of an experience that is tangentially linked to the article or an earlier post. A third group simply lists their feelings about each item posted in the daily gossip roundup.
My personal faves are the ones who are OFFENDED about an article or comment, so they share a personal story that explains in a 1000 snark-laden words exactly why they are so offended.
I’d love to attend a cocktail party with all these fucking smug erudite navel-gazers.

This is my favorite comment in a long time. Tattoo shame! LOL.

I never read Dooce until she and her husband announced their separation (and even now I only do cursory check-ins). While aware of her blog, I knew very little of it. I just thought that she was a “mommy blogger” in that she shared recipes and beautiful pictures of her kids and pets and wrote…

If you want to be truly intimidating,

If you want to make an impact,

If you want to have strong connections with others

just be sincere.

Sarcasm is not an attitude, and it’s not a personality trait. It’s a style of rhetoric meant to be used occasionally to highlight a larger point. Saying…

I think more new moms need to hear this. It’s my feeling that in addition to being overtired, they have to act blissed out at the experience lest they be labelled a monster. I really feel badly for them, because it’s so obvious that some of them are REALLY unhappy but can’t or won’t express it.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the parents of the world (even those that claim to be friends) aren’t totally upfront about what a fucking absolute nightmare it is to have a newborn. When I’ve confronted people about this in the past six weeks they sort of just laugh it off and say, “Oh, I guess…

"Has anybody been watching the debates lately? You’ve got a governor whose state is on fire denying climate change. It’s true. You’ve got audiences cheering at the prospect of somebody dying because they don’t have healthcare and booing a service member in Iraq because they’re gay. That’s not reflective of who we are,"

"We have a lot of kids graduating college, can’t find jobs, that’s what happened in Cairo, that’s what happened in Madrid. You don’t want those kinds of riots here. The damage to a generation that can’t find jobs will go on for many, many years."
